Forerunner 405 -

hr-cf-forerunner405 Just found out about a new Garmin Forerunner that you can actually wear when not running without looking like an absolute twat.

Anyway I was hoping that the battery life would be better and so would be a possibility for wearing during the WHW run but it is only eight hours so no use.  Plus points is that it is an HRM and works with the Garmin foot pod.  Will be for sale in the UK in March/April.

PS Anyone work for Garmin?  I can review it if you send me a review model... ;-)

Marco the Garmin 305 battery lasts 10 hours so if you buy two these should last you for the duration of the race ;-)

Buy the 405 and finish the WHW before the battery runs out. Simple!

Hey Sonic,
I thought the new super- lightweight trainers made you even more supersonic?
Puts a new perspective on racing against the clock. On the plus side, you'd get a disabled parking space in the office.

Thank you for your comments guys. Beeing a bit of a skinflint I decided that Stephen had the better idea saying that I just have to finish the race before the Garmin runs out of batteries. I have worked out that to do this I need to run at 6 min miles. I will then finish the race in 9 hours 30 mins. A new record by some way I do believe. The battery last 10 hours so I will be able to have 30 mins of stops. Bonus.
There are other positives to this. I should be in Fort William in time for lunch and perhaps take in a wee game of shinty in the afternoon and still be able to watch the second place runner come in.
Although I do think that it is more likely that you can all say that you know me when I feature on the 9pm news on the Saturday night about a daft runner dying on the WHW.

Maybe the garmin 101 is not so bad after all. It runs on AAA rechargable batteries so I can carry a spare set and use the watch for the whole race!! Sorted.

BTW - good to read you can both make the 16 Feb. I thought you said you couldn't make that one or maybe I misheard??

mmm... Good idea with the 101. Older technology is better after all in this instance. Maybe I need to talk nicely to someone and borrow it from them for race day.

Yeah I originally couldn't make it on the 16th as I had Mountain Rescue training. I have to do some work on the Friday night and then again on Saturday sometime so I wont be able to make the MR stuff but the good thing is I can make the WHW training run. So that is good.
Hey I am gonna miss these runs after we have ran the race. I am really enjoying them.

Marco - you don't really need to see the distances as you'll know then by the time of the race: Drymen 12 miles, Balmaha 20 miles, Rowardennan 27 miles, Inversnaid 34 miles, Benglas Farm 41 miles and so on. If you forget, it even tells you them on the Harveys map! So you shouldn't need a Garmin at all - just use an ordinary watch :)

I'm toying with buying a Garmin 205 - have you tried one?

The 405 isn't out yet and looks to be pretty expensive (£185). Think I'll go a little cheaper.

Hi Ian, Yeah I wish I could remember all the distances. Not very good at that at the moment never mind when half delerious towards the end. Maybe I should write the times and distances with permanent marker on my arms. I could be the first runner to withdraw due to blood poisoning.

Hi Brian,
I have already replied to you on an email but thought it best to post it here too.

You asked about the Garmin 205. Yes I have one of them and they are an absolute godsend. As long as you have a GPS signal. Even in the centre of Glasgow I can get a signal (it just takes a bit of time) I load the data from the Garmin into a software package called Sporttracks which then gives you great reports on your runs and shows you a map of where you have been. Elevation profiles etc etc. The software is free so double bonus. My wife had a 205 and it leaked and broke and she bought another one the next day.

She has some thoughts on the 205 too.
Thats how good they are and how much you start to rely on them. Ok they are a bit big and you wont wear it on a night on the town. One issue though is you only get 12 hours battery life so no good for the WHW.
